HORFIELD SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
Chairs Report 2018-2019
Since agreeing to oversee the running of the last Christmas Fair and then coming on board as Chair since February this year (my second time in post, previously having done it for three years a while back), I had forgotten how crazy busy but how worthwhile and rewarding it is, to be part of such an amazing group and an important part of our school community.
We all work so hard behind the scenes and it’s not just in the run up to an event, it’s continual – looking at new ideas, ordering the standard stuff – birthday box presents etc, tidying up of the red shed, reading up on latest publications, chasing up on quotes and funding requests, always being that 6 months in advance for event planning etc. The list of what we get involved in is certainly endless!
We have had a year with lots of fantastic events and great fundraising efforts such as the two fairs, Nutty Noah show, discos, cake sales, ice-cream sales, used uniform sales and BBQs and we’ve tried to introduce some new items too such as the sponsored Easter Bunny Hop (a great money maker for not having to do much) and the Pop-up Science Stall – I feel it’s always nice to tie in events linked to current learning topics where we can.
As a result of the monies that we have raised over the past year, we have had the pleasure of funding (or promised to) whole class music lessons, outdoor learning equipment, new books, theatre trips, external workshop providers, cooking equipment and very recently we are excited to have secured an upcoming famous artist, Jody Thomas, to paint the green container on the playground. We have funded more than I can list this year! All of which will enhance the learning and educational play of our children.
We have also been able to purchase for the school things which we hope will make the children's time at Horfield memorable. We gave every child a book at Christmas and all Year 6 leavers were given a powerbank and keyring with the school logo on. This is in addition to the book bags with a new book in for each reception child to start off their learning journey with us.
We currently have just over £23k in the bank, with approximately £12k about to be paid out to meet funding requests. This leaves around £11k to meet other fund requests or to put aside for larger projects – we know the playground still needs some shelter in the form of a sail (and quotes are being gathered for this), we have the mention of ICT animation equipment and also the reception playground needs a bit of a revamp. So potentially, lots to pay out or start saving for.
This year we will be working towards cutting down on our plastic use, trying to tie in more with the school healthy eating award and hopefully working with the Green Club to get some more recycling efforts up and running.
I think being part of the SA is a great thing to do – you get to know the teachers, pupils, how the school works and I think it makes your children proud (& sometimes embarrassed all at the same time!). It’s also great for our children because they get a whole new layer of SA friends too!
I am really proud to work with you all and want to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone involved, however much time you put in. It doesn’t matter if you are an ad hoc helper, only want to do certain jobs or are a regular committee member. We are so grateful for any support you offer and your help, ideas and enthusiasm are extremely valued. The interest in us over the past few months has really lifted my spirits too, so THANK YOU!!
